Ike isn't a new character, dammit!

Lots of media outlets and blogs are reporting the arrival of Super Smash Bros. "new" brawler Ike from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance for the Nintendo GameCube. Enough with this, I will clarify.

See this kid?

That's Ike.

See this kid?

That's Marth.

From a literary standpoint, Ike is a very different character from Marth. He has a different name and his sword is spray-painted gold. From a SSB perspective, all of you SSB losers have been fooled. If you look closely, you'll notice both Ike and Marth have similar colored hair. That's what gives it all away.

These character "changes" are just as dynamic as the transitions between SSBM Bowser to SSBB Bowser and SSBM Link to SSBB Link. This time, it's from Marth to Ike (Marth = Ike!!!1!!!).

Fanboys, don't talk to me about this kinda shit: I know my stuff. If you want to see new characters, wait until the next trailer, bitch.

Brawl Update: Wario

It's about time we learned about Wario. He's just about in every screenshot we've seen so far. Seriously, this stuff should've been discussed the first day Smash Bros. DOJO!! went online. Check this shit out:

"It’s rumored that this unpredictable character will give birth to a form of martial arts that other characters cannot even see."

Can't even see? I'm assuming Sakurai's referring to the Wario Waft.

Jack Thompson Moves to the UK

Well, not exactly, but we're sure he's thinking about it. In a not entirely surprising move by the British Board of Film Classification, Manhunt 2 for PS2, PSP, and Wii will be BANNED in that one country floating above the rest of Europe.

Awwww, and we didn't even get to see some protests around the Take-Two HQ yet! No fair.

British Board of Film Classification director David Cooke had this to say:

"Rejecting a work is a very serious action, and one which we do not take lightly. Where possible we try to consider cuts or, in the case of games, modifications which remove the material which contravenes the Board's published Guidelines. In the case of Manhunt 2 this has not been possible. Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing. There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game."

For the full press release, hit the jump.

There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game.
Although the difference should not be exaggerated the fact of the game's unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying and the sheer lack of alternative pleasures on offer to the gamer, together with the different overall narrative context, contribute towards differentiating this submission from the original Manhunt game. That work was classified '18' in 2003, before the BBFC's recent games research had been undertaken, but was already at the very top end of what the Board judged to be acceptable at that category.

Against this background, the Board's carefully considered view is that to issue a certificate to Manhunt 2, on either platform, would involve a range of unjustifiable harm risks, to both adults and minors, within the terms of the Video Recordings Act, and accordingly that its availability, even if statutorily confined to adults, would be unacceptable to the public."

An appeals process is still open to Rockstar, should they choose to oppose the decision. Such a move seems likely, considering the decision originally passed down for the UK's first banned game, Carmageddon, was overturned after a secondary review.

"A decision from the BBFC such as this demonstrates that we have a games ratings system in the UK that is effective. It shows it works and works well. Any decision the BBFC takes, it takes on the basis of its remit to rate on screen entertainment," said Paul Jackson, director of the British Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (analogous to the ESRB in North America). "The games industry is a creative phenomenon that produces all kinds of games across all kinds of genres that appeal to all kinds of people across the country, young and old, male and female. The important thing to know is that all games are rated according to age suitability, with over 70 per cent of games being available to all ages over three years."

Brawl Update: Pikachu's Final Smash

It's looking like Final Smash week here on the Super Smash Bros. side of things. Today's Brawl update focuses on Pikachu's ultra-special attack. It makes you wonder, though. Shouldn't have these tidbits of information been released on the days that SSB characters Link and Pikachu were discussed? I mean, these are characters that have been around since the original SSB.

"Volt Tackle is unleashed! Pikachu transforms into a ball of light... You can now control that ball of light for a brief period.
Hunt them! Hunt them down!"

This looks like a move that would work perfectly with the Wiimote.

Virtual Console Mondays: Bloody Wolf Edition

No sequels this week. Well, that is, if you believe Mario's NES golf game isn't a sequel to anything in his long-running video game career. Or if you believe World Sports Competition isn't the true sequel to today's Olympics. Now that's just silly!

Bloody Wolf (TurboGrafx-16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points):
Enter alone, deep into enemy territory to rescue the kidnapped President in this overhead-view action shooter. Take on the role of a commando in a Special Forces team and face your enemies with an onslaught of weapons, including machine guns and grenades. Earn valuable information, weapons and items by rescuing POWs. Fight your way to the end of each stage and defeat the boss by effectively using your weapons and equipment. This port of the insanely popular arcade game features refined graphics, story and cut-scenes, making this action game a must-have. This new and enhanced version includes the never-been-told second half of the story that was left out of the arcade version.

"Bloody Wolf is one of the most challenging games to hit VC to date, but once you get the hang of the enemy ambushes you start to appreciate the fact that it lets you blast a row of bad guys with exploding drums. Who needs Doom?" Worth it! - 1up

"Players may find this game quite difficult in places but it is worth preserving with. Whilst this game is far from a classic it stands as one of the better games on the TurboGrafx and offers an excellent challenge if you can just resist using too many of the continues provided." 4 out of 5 - The Virtual Console Archive

NES Open Tournament Golf and World Sports Championship after the jump.

NES Open Tournament Golf (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points):
We all knew that Mario was a top-notch plumber, but did you know that he could also be a world-class golfer? You can challenge another player in Stroke, Match and Tournament modes. Play on three fantasy courses in the USA, the UK and Japan and try to win a million dollars. Make sure you keep an eye on the wind and distance to the hole before selecting your club, or else you'll be racking up some high scores - which is exactly what you don't want to do in this game. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced golfer, NES Open Tournament Golf is perfect for those days when you just can't get to the local golf course.

"...an awkward mashup that plays a little too slowly and acts a little too unfriendly for its own good. In short, it's not exactly the golf equivalent of Tecmo Bowl -- avoid." Not Worth it! - 1up

"...if you really want a good game of golf you could do much better with Mario's more recent outings, or indeed Tiger Woods or Wii Sports... This is a[n] 8-bit game and as such it's very competent and fun to play. It does what it says on the tin. If the idea of playing a retro golf game with Mario and Co appeals to you then give this game a try, you could do a lot worse." 3 out of 5 - The Virtual Console Archive

World Sports Competition (TurboGrafx-16, 1-5 players, 600 Wii Points):
Play through a total of 18 Olympic events in this action/sports title. Players compete in six categories of events that include shooting, archery, rowing, swimming and track and field. The game features Olympics mode, where you play all the events over the course of a few days, and Training mode, where you can choose individual events to play. After practicing in Training mode, go for the gold in Olympics mode and break world records. Depending on your play time and ability, you can enjoy the game a number of different ways. Gather friends and play in competitions with up to five players to get even more out of this great game.

"...this is much less painful to play than the arcade and NES versions of the game it's ripping off." Worth it! - 1up

"For anything other than the biggest Olympic Games fan this is a complete waste of time." 2 out of 5 - The Virtual Console Archive

Brawl Update: Link's Final Smash

After a disappointing look at Samus last Friday, Brawl director attempts to compensate by supplying SSB fans with in-depth talk on Link's Final Smash attack.

"[Link] strikes repeatedly with lightening speed."

When an opponent gets trapped by Link's triforce, the Hyrulian warrior delivers a concentrated series of devastating attacks. The final blow has the potential to immediately knock a character off the stage.

FIFA 08 Wii, it's...different

Pfff, normal soccer aside, let's look at what real Wii gamers want: minigames! EA supports the (super) small, casual gaming revolution by including almost an entirely new game into what is already a renowned soccer title. What's more interesting (but not surprising) is the new aesthetic involved with this "FOOTii Party." A single screenshot should be sufficient:

Again, I'd like to caution the fact that this is not the full game. Your regular piece of FIFA action, teams and all, is still the main show. Just make sure that's the game you're playing when your friends come over.

Brawl Update: Crates and Barrels

Crates and barrels may not be necessarily new to the SSB franchise, but they've received a slight upgrade this time around: crate and barrels skins will change depending on each level.

On what appears to be Fox's stage, both crates and barrels have a metallic or futuristic look to them.

Or on Yoshi's Island, they're covered in wrapping paper:

"...By the way, this time we’ve thrown "sliding boxes" into the mix."

How "sliding boxes" work exactly, I don't know. All I have is this screenshot to go by.

Not bad, Sakurai. You win this time.

Wii Sales Reach -- what the...?

According to VG Chartz, the Nintendo Wii (get ready) has sold over...eight million units.

Yes, you've heard correct.

Success!

That's 8,000,000 Wiis, Wiimotes, and nunchuks. Just 2 million below 360 hardware sales. Pretty amazing stuff when you realize the 360 has been around for over a year and a half while Wii is still a newborn at almost 8 months.

I mean, I knew it was selling fast, but I never thought it would sell this many, this fast. It's almost absurd. It looks like we're gonna have to wait for NPD results later this month for a more accurate look at these findings.

SoulCalibur IV and SoulCalibur Legends

1up and EGM have the inside scoop on Namco's upcoming installations in the Soul Calibur franchise: Soul Calibur IV (video proof) and Soul Calibur Legends.

SC IV is the fourth iteration in the 3D fighting series, featuring fan favorites Ivy, Mitsurugi, and Nightmare. 360 and PS3 fans should expect this title sometime in 2008.

On the other end of the console spectrum, we have Soul Calibur Legends for the Nintendo Wii.

Just like many characteristics about Wii, Legends will have its own distinct flavor; gamers will play through an SC themed world outside the limitations of the conventional fighting norm. In other words, it's an adventure game. Since Legends was originally announced a little over a month ago, fans have been left salivating for new information. Here's what we now know.

  • Story takes place between Edge and Calibur. As we already know, Siegfried changes into Nightmare from SC1 to SC2, so the story in Legends will fill in the gap as to what happened

  • Selectable players will be limited at the beginning, but as players progress, they'll unlock more

  • Battles come in chunks of 5 minutes to 10-20 minutes
  • Each character learns new moves as they level up and are encouraging players become skilled in one specific player

  • Not all SC characters will be playable

  • Co-op play is still in the works, though likely split-screen.

  • Controls will be nunchuk + wiimote. Wiimote primarily for attacking, nunchuk for movement, buttons for as parrying and dodging

    Brawl Update: Yoshi's Island

    Dear Masahiro Sakurai,
I'm sorry to inform you that you, Mr. Sakurai, may have accidently posted new Super Smash Bros. Brawl content today on the SSB website/blog. It's also confirmed that you have coincidentally given out information on in-level seasonal weather changes and something you like to refer as "support ghosts." The following pictures were posted on the SSB website at 4:30 PM yesterday evening. Just wanted to let you know, in case you gave away a bit too much.

    Always looking out for you,
    Human "Hotcakes" Waste

    At least it's aesthetically pleasing:

"The highlight of this stage is its seasonal changes, as it goes from spring to summer to fall and then winter."

I really like how the levels are becoming more dynamic. Should be cool to see Pit's destructible Greek Mythos stage.

Virtual Console Mondays: Sonic 2 Edition

What's with all these sequels? Sonic 2? Zelda II? Golden Axe II? Proof that sequelitis has never been a new thing. Game developers/publishers have always felt the urge to make just one dollar more. Enjoy your infected hedgehog, kids!

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points):
Dr. Eggman (aka Dr. Robotnik) is back to continue his zealous search for the Chaos Emeralds needed to fuel his new Death Egg contraption. The evil doctor secretly follows Sonic to his vacation spot, Westside Island, and launches a full-scale attack, imprisoning all the helpless animals of the island and turning them into mindless worker drones. Now Sonic must thwart the doctor's plans at all costs. This time he isn't alone, as a peculiar two-tailed fox named Miles Prower (aka Tails) decides to aid him in the battle. Together they must locate the Chaos Emeralds before Dr. Eggman does, and put an end to his diabolical scheme.

"If you're burned out on Sonic, or already own a dozen copies of the game, skip this download; but for those who have only experienced the original, this is definitely a worthy purchase." Worth It! - 1up

"...Sonic Team [will] never match the level of brilliance seen here and the blue hedgehog has become a bit of a joke in recent times thanks to a string of lacklustre titles. But forget all that - now is as good a time as any to enjoy what remains Sonic's finest hour!" 5 out of 5 - The Virtual Console Archive

    Zelda II Edition

Lode Runner and Golden Axe II after the jump.

Lode Runner (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points):
This landmark action-puzzle game has been a worldwide fixture in video games from the moment of its inception until today, producing many sequels and related products along the way. The player controls the hero, or “Runner,” who collects gold nuggets located around every stage, all the while avoiding capture by enemy robots. The action itself is simple, but the stages are designed as increasingly challenging puzzles, and none of the 50 stages is as easy as it seems. The Runner avoids enemies by digging holes in the floor to the right and left of his position—by doing this, he can clear a path to places that, at first glance, seem unreachable. Players must use their brains to collect all the gold nuggets in every puzzling stage if they want to escape to the next. In addition to normal play, this version of the game features an Edit Mode that allows players to design their own stages, adding a new level of enjoyment to the game.

"...only truly dedicated Lode fans need apply." Not Worth It! - 1up

"This game is great fun to play however the NES version has dated considerably. If you want some Lode Runner action we recommend checking out the superior TurboGrafx-16 version which is also available on the Virtual Console." 3 out of 5 - The Virtual Console Archive

Golden Axe II (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points):
Not long after the devastating reign of the wicked Death Adder, another evil arose. Dark Guld and his minions invaded and took hold of the prized Golden Axe with plans to destroy it. Once again, as a fierce barbarian named Ax-Battler, a fearless female Amazon known as Tyris-Flare or a ferocious dwarf named Gilius Thunderhead, you will wield steely swords and powerful magic in an all-out war to recover the sword. Once you slash your way through the six side-scrolling levels, you'll get the chance to defeat Dark Guld once and for all.

"...you'll find your share of quality home brawlers out there -- Sega's Streets of Rage games, for instance. Golden Axe, though, isn't among the ranks, and its $8 asking price on VC is about $7.75 too much." Not Worth It! - 1up

"It's a shame that Sega expected the general public to pay good money for a game they'd already played to death over a year beforehand, but Golden Axe 2 is still a worthy purchase for fans of the series." 3 out of 5 - The Virtual Console Archive

    Brawl Update: Control Schemes

The lack of updates I reported this week was of no coincidence. They sucked. Hard. Take a look at Wednesday's update; they might as well called it, "You have to win." Thanks for the heads up! Thursday's wasn't an update either since it gave players a look at characters Kirby and Pikachu, SSB veterans from the past two games. Sweet! It wasn't until yesterday that players got something they could ponder on, if only ponder. In other words, it was the only "new" information that lived up the dictionary definition of "update": giving fans information that really is up to date.

Four kinds of control! So, no matter what type of control scheme a Wii gamer prefers or has invested in, it will work in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Sideways Wii-mote? Check. Wii-mote + Nunchuk? Check. Classic Controller? Check. GameCube controller? Check.

However, like most SSB experts, Brawl director Masahiro Sakurai prefers the good ol' GC pad.

"I suppose I would recommend the Nintendo GameCube controller, though. I like the feel of that powerful rumble.

Still, try out the other controls—they definitely give you a fresh experience."

Unfortunately, like all past updates, they must end in a miserable, tortuous cliffhanger:

"How do you do smashes and dashes with just the Wii Remote?
If I get the chance to tell you, I will."

Manhunt 2: Thompson rears his ugly head again

In an otherwise bleak third-party Wii lineup, Manhunt 2 has been my shining star for some time. Good thing I'm not a Floridian. Jack Thompson rears his ugly head again this week, pressing Florida's attorney general to stall the release of Manhunt 2 in that state. He's even appealed to the governor to declare the game a public nuisance. The irony should not be lost on you if you've been following Thompson's illustrious career.

What makes the Wii version worthy of special attention? Well, for one, it's fair to assume that the game will have you swinging your motion-sensitive Wiimote in unsavory directions. Imagine yourself brandishing a virtual bat, using striking motions to pummel your opponent into unconsciousness—with force-feedback! Or sneaking up behind the enemy and using the Wiimote and Nunchuk to strangle him. Or smothering him with a grocery bag (the sounds of crumpling plastic coming from the Wiimote speaker) and plunging a knife into his side, then twisting the Wiimote, slowly... but I'm getting ahead of myself.

What's funny is that this is probably the first game in Thompson's crusade that actually is a "murder simulator."

    Brawl Update: Pokemans

It's an all Pokemon update today. Brawl director Masihiro Sakurai briefly describes the function of Pokeballs (like we don't already know) and goes on to unveil the addition of Groudon to the Smash Bros. pokemon-inside-a-ball family.

"[Groudon] is the Pokémon that appeared on the packaging for Pokémon Ruby. Its bright red body is quite striking... [Its body is] always hot to the touch.

It won’t harm the player who called it, though, so use that to your advantage."

Mild, but a good update for any Smash Bros. newbies.

Virtual Console Mondays: Zelda II Edition

I'm not a retro gamer. I can't explain to you why Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is the best place for your money this week on Virtual Console. Not to mention those press release snippets are nothing to go by. That's why I'll cumulate reviews from across the interwebs each week in the hopes you'll be persuaded by today's modern retro reviewers. Trust me, they're geniuses.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Link returns to Hyrule to search for the Triforce and to awaken Zelda from an endless sleep. Embark on a quest to find the Triforce of Courage and save Hyrule from ruin. Learn magic spells, talk to people in towns to get clues, collect items to increase your power and explore six palaces where the underlings of the evil Ganon await you. This sequel to the Adventure classic uses a side-scrolling visual engine unique to the series for more technical combat, and features more in-depth world roaming as Link encounters townsfolk while on his quest.

"...even though it's absent the charm and elegance of the first and third games, it was also a proving ground for a lot of ideas that have appeared in more recent episodes." Worth It! - 1up

"...released in 1988 this game wasn't received with the enthusiasm of it's prequel. It's not difficult to understand why, considering it's a break from the familiar mould that made Zelda popular in the first place." 3 out of 5 - The Virtual Console Archive

Dead Moon, Milon's Secret Castle, and ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron after the jump.

Dead Moon (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): This side-scrolling shooter includes a total of six scenes spanning areas from Earth to the moon. The story begins with a comet discovered in the vicinity of Pluto that is headed on a sudden collision course with Earth. Mankind narrowly succeeds in diverting the comet's course, and it crashes into the moon. However, investigations into the damage uncover that what hit the moon was not a comet, but a gigantic mother ship. Power up your ship, destroy enemies and fight your way through the bosses in an attempt to reach the moon's core and protect Earth from alien invasion. Enjoy the unique world of Dead Moon, including various stages with beautiful backgrounds, a power-up system that increases your attack as well as your defense and bosses that have you altering your ship's direction to fight them.

"...this is just a side-scrolling version of Blazing Lazers from two weeks ago, which is just a bit too much, too soon. Shooter fans will want it, but everyone else can pass it up without losing any sleep." Not Worth It! - 1up

"If you’re a shooter fan you will feel affronted by this insipid and characterless title, and if you detest shooters then there is certainly nothing here that will change your perception. Avoid!" 2 out of 5 - The Virtual Console Archive

Milon's Secret Castle (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): It is a world where music is the language of the people. An evil warlord from the north arrives and captures the castle. The princess is imprisoned deep within the castle, and the world's musical instruments are taken and hidden away. Our hero, Milon, takes it upon himself to fight the warlord, rescue the princess and recover the people's musical instruments. He has only his wits and the magical Bubble to aid him on his quest. Help Milon along the way by looking for hidden doors, finding secret items and defeating fierce enemies. Make sure to look for the shops inside the castle, where you can buy hints and valuable items. Whenever Milon finds a Music Box, he will be transported to a bonus stage. Each instrument you find will add a layer to the background music. Try to grab all seven instruments to create a performance worthy of a music-themed game.

"Milon's Secret Castle is the furthest possible thing from fun; it's ugly, primitive and full of counter-intuitive requirements." Not Worth It! - 1up

"Milon is incredibly frustrating – in fact, it’s almost legendary in this regard... Add to this some terrible graphics, annoying music and repetitive gameplay and it becomes hard to recommend." 2 out of 5 - The Virtual Console Archive

ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): During ToeJam and Earl's trip back home, a number of Earthlings hitchhiked on their spaceship and are now infesting planet Funkotron. ToeJam and Earl must track down the Earthlings in order to capture them in large jars and ship them back to Earth in spaceships.
